I made this piece highlighting the story of the "Comfort Women" of Korea, where rape was a weapon of war like sex slavery. The Japanese invasion of Korea during World War II was a well organized operation by the Japanese military to round up young Korean(Asian) women to service the invading armies. Known as "Comfort Women," these young girls were forced into brothels for the duration of the war. More than 70 years after the invasion, many Japanese deny this outrage and have not offered an apology to victims.

I painted the candlelight over some of the "Comfort Women" articles, because not many victims are alive, and they will die soon. As the candle burns down, so life’s memories decrease. This kind of war crime should never be forgotten so what happened will never happen again. If Japan wants to stand up as a respected nation, it must reflect on its past history and must apologize to its victims. The world should remember the famous quote by the Spanish philosopher, George Santayana, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
